Bee in the Know: Changes to the NetID Lifecycle

Picture of the Central Authentication Login page

Your Yale NetID confirms who you are and gives you access to Yale’s online resources. Anyone who enrolls, is hired, or has valid business reasons for University access gets a NetID. This NetID stays with the individual their entire time at Yale.

But what happens once that time at Yale has come to an end?

Yale's Identity and Access Management (IAM) team has made recent changes to when we lock NetIDs. These changes are based on your role at Yale.

Important note: Graduates from Yale's School of Law or School of Management are out of scope at this time.

New NetID Locking Schedule for Alumni

Beginning in 2023, Yale will lock Alumni NetIDs following a one-year grace period. Here is what that means for recent graduates:

  • For 2022 Yale Graduates, Alumni NetIDs will lock in early August 2023.
  • For 2023 Yale Graduates, NetIDs will lock 365 days after graduation.

For pre-2022 graduates with active NetIDs, but who don't have an active role with Yale, their NetIDs will be locked in batches. Timing and communications to be scheduled through a collaborative effort with the individual schools, the Student Technology Collaborative (STC), and the IT Help Desk.

Schedule for Faculty, Staff, and Sponsored Identities

As of March 2023, all NetIDs for faculty and staff are disabled following a 45-day grace period. Sponsored Identities are disabled immediately following expiration. Advanced notifications are sent on a 30, 10, and 3 days prior cadence.
