Bee Aware: Spring clean your digital space

Bee Aware Hero: Stack of papers with a padlock and chain

Spring isn’t just for tidying up your home—it’s the perfect time to declutter your digital life, too! Just like a messy desk can slow you down, a cluttered computer or overflowing inbox can put Yale data at risk. Unused files, outdated software, and forgotten downloads take up space.  They can also create cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

Why Digital Decluttering Matters

Think of your data like your wardrobe—some things you need to keep and others should be properly stored. Some items need to go. The most secure data is data that no longer exists when it’s no longer needed. Keeping digital clutter under control helps:

  • Improve security by reducing exposure to outdated, vulnerable files.
  • Enhance device performance, keeping everything running smoothly.
  • Ensure compliance with Yale’s data retention policies. Then sensitive information isn’t kept longer than necessary.

Three Steps to a More Secure Digital Life

Declutter Your Files. Review your downloads, desktop, and old documents. Delete anything unnecessary and move important files to Yale-approved secure cloud storage.

Uninstall Unused Programs. Old apps and software can have security flaws. If you don’t use it, remove it!

Empty Your Recycling Bin. Deleting files isn’t enough. Until you empty your trash, they can still pose a risk.

Cybersecurity Insights from the Experts

Recently, we explored the impact of digital clutter on security and productivity on the Bee Cyber Fit podcast. The episode compared data management to sorting laundry—some things need special care.
