Did you know that 82% of data loss resulted from human error? That’s according to Verizon’s 2022 Data Breaches Investigations Report.

The truth is, we’re all busy and can be distracted. Whether from phishing attempts, stolen credentials, or a simple error, unintentional lapses may put Yale at risk.

That’s why it’s everyone’s job to protect Yale's data. When you safeguard the data you work with, you support the university’s mission.

Here are three actions you can take:

  • Back up your data. Yale offers backup services that allow for automatic and continuous data backup. Data backup lets you restore your files if your device is lost or stolen.
  • Use the Yale VPN. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) makes your Internet connection more secure. It enables you to access Yale's on-campus resources from a non-Yale internet source.
  • Create secure passwords and enable MFA on work and personal accounts. The best passwords are complex, combining alpha, numeric, and special characters. Make your passwords into passphrases, and they’re even harder to crack.

With summer upon us, keeping our data and devices secure also extends to your travel plans. No matter where you go, be vigilant about protecting your information.

Remember these tips:

  • Unknown and public networks at places like coffee shops can be less secure. Use the Yale VPN to reduce risk if you must connect to a network off-campus or outside your home.
  • Consider your social media approach. Cybercriminals may take notice of your vacation photos indicating you’re away. Be mindful about what you post.
  • Leave unneeded devices at home. If you don’t need it, don’t take it. Mobile devices can easily be lost or stolen when you’re distracted.
